A Germantown man’s death in July is tied to injuries he suffered five weeks earlier, when he was struck by an SUV while walking in Gaithersburg, Montgomery County police said Thursday.
Michael Joseph Roberts, 60, of Germantown, was crossing northbound North Frederick Avenue right before the intersection of Travis Lane on May 31. He was hit by a 2011 Toyota RAV4 heading north on North Frederick Avenue.
County police officers and fire and rescue personnel responded to the scene around 9:24 p.m. Roberts was taken to a local hospital with serious injuries. He died on July 5.
The state Office of the Chief Medical Examiner recently ruled that his death was the result of injuries from when he was hit, police said in a news release on Thursday.
The RAV4 was being driven by 40-year-old Fabiola Alejandra Perez of Germantown. Perez was not injured and did not face any charges relating to the incident as of Thursday afternoon.
Police continue to investigate the circumstances of the crash.
Roberts is the ninth pedestrian or bicyclist killed in the county this year, according to a running count of fatal crashes Bethesda Beat is keeping. The most recent incident was a Winston Churchill High School student hit by an SUV after falling off his bike in Bethesda.
