Rockville man allegedly beaten, robbed inside home
Montgomery County police are investigating an alleged beating and robbery of Satpal Singh, 79, of Rockville. Singh’s son, Mandeep Narula, said he found his father injured and lying in a pool of blood Monday and that his wallet and other items had been stolen [Fox 5].
Toxins Found in Two County Lakes
Microcystin, a toxin produced by blue-green algae, has been found in Lake Needwood and Lake Frank, which are both in Rock Creek Regional Park. The contaminants can cause liver damage to humans and pets. Officials from the county parks department recommend avoiding contact with the lakes and keeping their pets away from the water [WTOP].
One year later, search for missing Silver Spring woman continues
One year after Brenda Hopkins, 69, of Silver Spring disappeared, Montgomery County police have yet to develop any leads. Hopkins’ sister Michelle says Brenda left home to walk to a nearby Giant on New Hampshire Ave on Aug. 8, 2018, but never returned. Police Detective Katie Leggett said they have had a difficult time establishing a “clear and concise” timeline of what happened based on Michelle’s account and that search dogs taken throughout the neighborhood have not found any evidence [Fox 5].
Maryland casinos generated $542 million for education in one year
Casinos in Maryland produced a record $542 million for the state’s education trust fund in fiscal year 2019, according to the state lottery and gaming agency’s annual report released Monday. The trust fund makes up about 30% of the total revenue from the casinos and goes toward paying for education reforms called for by the Kirwan Commission [WAMU].
