School board awards diploma to veteran
The Montgomery County Board of Education last month awarded a high school diploma to a former Montgomery Blair High School student who was drafted for war and could not complete his secondary education 66 years ago.
Alvin Freedman, 85, now a South Carolina resident, said in a brief phone interview that obtaining his diploma was something he had “been fighting for for a long time.” He declined to speak more about it.The diploma was dated in the year 1953, school board President Shebra Evans said at the meeting.
“In receiving this diploma, Captain Freedman is entitled to all privileges and honors awarded to a graduate of a high school accredited by the Maryland State Department of Education,” Evans said.
MCPS seeking volunteers for world language courses
The Montgomery County school system is seeking volunteers to help expand its world language programs in elementary schools.
In the program, bilingual volunteers work with students who need help learning a second language. There also is an “interactive online platform,” in which students complete
MCPS is seeking volunteers bilingual in English and Spanish, French or Chinese.
Back to School Fair Aug. 24
The Montgomery County Public Schools Back to School Fair is scheduled for Aug. 24 at Westfield Wheaton mall.
The fair provides health screenings for children, free immunizations for students in middle and high school, information about curriculum and family-friendly activities.
The fair runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the mall on Veirs Mill Road.
Free shuttle bus services begin at 9:30 a.m. from Paint Branch, John F. Kennedy, Northwest, Albert Einstein, Watkins Mill and Montgomery Blair high schools and Carver Educational Services Center.
