East West Highway between Beach Drive and Brookeville Road reopened Saturday after having been closed since Thursday due to a water main break. The Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission tweeted early Saturday morning that the highway had reopened.
The portion of the road closed Thursday afternoon, when a water main break washed away part of the road at Connecticut Ave and Jones Mill Road in Chevy Chase, closing all lanes in both directions.
WSSC posted on Twitter on Friday that 800 tons of asphalt would be needed to fix the four lanes.
WSSC spokesman Luis Maya said it was not clear what caused the pipe to break, but he thinks the fact that the pipe is 88 years old was a factor.
Maya said repairs such as this one are common, but this one was more disruptive because it happened on a major road.
“It was a relatively big pipe, and it caused a lot of damage to the road. It’s a major artery — that’s the biggest issue,” he said.
