Montgomery County police arrested and charged a Germantown man on Tuesday with raping a woman in 2017 after DNA evidence from another crime linked him to the case.
David Lee Williams, 29, was charged with first-degree rape and two counts of assault and one count of reckless endangerment, police announced Wednesday.
Williams allegedly grabbed the victim at a bus stop on Watkins Mill Road at Travis Lane in Gaithersburg, pulled her to a wooded area and sexually assaulted her, police said.
County detectives gathered DNA from the Oct. 6, 2017, crime scene. In February 2018, the department received notice that DNA from an attempted residential burglary in Gaithersburg on Aug. 7, 2017, matched the DNA from the rape incident.
Detectives compared both investigations and found that someone named “David” might have been involved in each case, police said. David Lee Williams was then identified as a potential suspect, and a warrant was obtained for his DNA on Monday.
Testing matched Williams’ DNA to both crime scenes, and he was arrested in Germantown.
Williams is scheduled to appear in Rockville District Court on Sept. 6. He was being held without bond in a county detention center. Online records do not list attorney representation as of Thursday morning.
