Rockville church to close, donate $1 million to charity
Twinbrook Baptist Church in Rockville will close in August due to declining enrollment, but congregation leaders say they will donate $1 million of the proceeds from selling the facility.
For 63 years, the low-slung, brick church on Twinbrook Parkway has proudly advertised its liberal values. Its logo incorporates rainbow colors. Its members march in Pride parades. A sign formerly on the front lawn declared, “All Are Welcome. Really.” [Washington Post]
Montgomery getting East Coast’s first ‘protected intersection’
Silver Spring will soon install the East Coast’s first “protected intersection,” according to county transportation officials.
The intersection, which will be at the intersection of Second Avenue and Spring Street near downtown Silver Spring, features a number of safety features designed to protect pedestrians and cyclists from traffic. [WTOP]
Lightning strike starts fire at Derwood townhouse
Several families were displaced when lightning struck a townhouse in Derwood early Sunday.
No one was injured, but there was an estimated $300,000 in damage. [WTOP]
