School board introduces resolution to support healthy meals
Montgomery County Public Schools has many initiatives in place to promote students’ access to healthy school lunches. On Monday, the school board introduced a resolution to make those efforts mandatory.
At a business meeting, board members introduced a resolution directing its policy management committee to draft a policy that “addresses the school system’s role in combating childhood hunger.”
The resolution highlights MCPS efforts to provide healthy food to students, including the Dine with Dignity program, which allows students to receive lunch even if they cannot pay a negative school lunch fund balance. MCPS also partners with the Manna Food Center to provide meals and snacks in backpacks to students to “ensure that students have access to healthy meals over the weekends,” according to the resolution.
The new policy is expected to be presented to the school board during the 2019-20 school year.

Graduates were awarded “many prestigious scholarships,” the school system said in a news release, including full-tuition scholarships.
Seventy-five MCPS students were named National Merit scholarship awardees. Two seniors were recognized as U.S. Presidential Scholars.
“I am very proud of our graduates and the hard work they put in to prepare themselves for college and career,” Superintendent Jack Smith said in a news release. “They are very deserving of these scholarships and I look forward to hearing about their continued success in the future.”
