Three elementary schools will remain in temporary locations through the 2019-20 school year due to a delay in construction projects at their permanent facilities.
Completion dates were pushed back for projects at Luxmanor, Maryvale and Potomac elementary schools. Each school was previously expected to move back into its permanent home in the middle of the year.
A school board resolution passed Monday says they will “fully occupy their facilities at the beginning of the 2020-2021 school year.”
“In addition, the newly revitalized and expanded school facilities will be available in spring 2020 for school teams to utilize for parent events, open houses and promotional activities,” the resolution says, citing weather as the cause for delays.
Luxmanor, in North Bethesda, is undergoing a $26 million expansion to increase the school’s capacity from 410 to 750 students.
Luxmanor students have been attending classes at Grosvenor Center, a temporary school, on Grosvenor Lane since 2017.
The project, now expected to be completed in February, includes a three-story building to add 10 classrooms. The school will have about 80 parking spaces and room for nine buses in a bus-loop driveway.
MCPS is completing a $52 million revitalization and expansion at Maryvale Elementary School in Rockville, expected to be finished in April.
The project will add about 30 classrooms and increase the school’s capacity from 626 to about 700 students. Seventeen new classrooms are being added to the collocated Carl Sandburg Learning Center.
Maryvale students currently attend classes at a temporary location about 3 miles away on Bauer Drive in Rockville.
Potomac Elementary, home to 430 students, is undergoing an expansion to add 20 classrooms, parking space and new playground space. While the $30 million project is being completed, Potomac Elementary students are attending classes at the Radnor Holding Center in Bethesda.
The project will increase the school’s maximum capacity from 425 students to 472 students.
