A 2019 Clarksburg High School graduate was killed in a single-vehicle crash in Ellicott City on Friday, state police said.
State troopers responded to Interstate 70 East for the report of a crash at around 4:30 p.m. A Toyota Camry had struck the guardrail on the left side of the road.
Tyler Gergler, 18, of Ijamsville, was pronounced dead by medical personnel at the scene.
State police are still investigating the reason Gergler’s vehicle left the road and hit the guardrail, but believe he was heading to New Jersey to visit family.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
Shortly after 3 p.m. on Saturday, Clarksburg High School Principal Edward Owusu announced in a social media post addressed to school staff and families that Gergler had died in the crash.
“Tyler was a wonderful young man and excelled academically,” Owusu wrote in Twitter post. “He will be greatly missed.”
Gergler played football and ran track and field at Clarksburg, Owusu said. He graduated this past school year.
