SANS Institute Receives Grant to Extend Cybersecurity Program
The Bethesda-based training company SANS Institute will be able to continue its Cyber Workforce Academy-Maryland initiative through May 2021 courtesy of an EARN Implementation Grant from the Maryland Department of Labor.
The program started in 2018, and teaches students about cyber defense and incident handling, focusing on developing workforce-ready cybersecurity professionals.
More than 75 state residents have completed the program over the past four years. The new grant will train another 95 people.
“This program is successfully helping to meet the critical need for a highly skilled cyber security workforce while providing invaluable opportunities for women, veterans, and minorities,” Maryland Department of Labor Acting Secretary James Rzepkowski said in a statement.
Employment Advancement Right Now (EARN) Maryland is a state-funded grant program designed to improve the workforce and create career paths for residents.
The training is held at various locations through the state, as well as online. The four-month program is open to all Maryland residents, with a focus on U.S. military veterans and women.
Graduates have gone on to work at companies such as GEICO, IronNet Cybersecurity and Booz Allen Hamilton.
Ingleside at King Farm adds memory support facilities
Adult living community Ingleside at King Farm now features Memory Support Assisted Living residences for those living with Alzheimer’s and other neurocognitive disorders, the company announced Wednesday.
The new facilities promote self-determination and choice among patients, while providing individualized programs such as music, art and pet therapy.
Ingleside at Rock Creek in Washington, D.C., added similar residences.
“Residents will continue their routine central to their lives, have access to and participate in purposeful and meaningful activities, and enhance their engagement in knowing themselves as a valued and important part of the community,” Ingleside President and CEO Lynn O’Connor said in a statement.
Ingleside at King Farm opened in 2009, joining sister communities Westminster at Lake Ridge and the Ingleside at Rock Creek.
Suburban Hospital receives national award for heart attack treatment
Bethesda-based Suburban Hospital was recognized last week as one of 95 recipients across the country of the American College of Cardiology’s NCDR ACTION Registry Silver Performance Achievement Award for 2018.
The award is presented to hospitals that have shown sustained success in treating heart attack patients based on the National Cardiovascular Data Registry’s standards.
“By meeting the requirements set forth in the registry and establishing a culture of providing guideline-recommended therapy, Suburban Hospital is saving lives and improving outcomes of heart attack patients,” ACTION Registry chair Dr. Deepak Bhatt said in a statement.
The American College of Cardiology’s ACTION Registry establishes national standards for heart attack care, and provides solutions for maximizing treatment success.
Montgomery County earns record-setting heritage grant funding
Montgomery County will receive $597,718 from the Maryland Heritage Areas Authority in Fiscal Year 2020, nonprofit Heritage Montgomery announced on Wednesday.
All 10 grant applicants earned full funding, led by six-figure awards for the Germantown Historical Society, county Department of Transportation and Heritage Montgomery for various projects and operational support.
Maryland’s heritage areas have generated $19.8 million in state and local taxes while creating 3,146 jobs, according to Heritage Montgomery.
