Beginning Monday, Metro Red Line riders heading north from Silver Spring north to Glenmont will have more trains.
The regional transit authority is ending the practice of offloading every other train at Silver Spring for it to reverse direction and travel south, back into the District of Columbia.
The authority added more money in its budget for the additional service to the Forest Glen, Wheaton and Glenmont stations, which combined serve more than 12,000 riders each weekday.
The so-called turn-back at Silver Spring and also Grosvenor-Strathmore stations started in 1984. Metro ended the turn-back at Grosvenor, in North Bethesda, late last year which brought more frequent rush-hour service for White Flint, Twinbrook, Rockville and Shady Grove riders.
At a town hall in January, riders and business owners expressed a desire for more trains and longer operating hours. A petition with more than 2,500 petition signatures was delivered to Metro supporting the end of the Silver Spring turnback.
