Countywide student activist group launches short film

Countywide student activist group Montgomery County Students for Change last week launched a new short film documenting its efforts to end gun violence in America.

The film, “Youth in Action: Montgomery County Students for Change,” chronicles outreach and organizing events to commemorate the anniversary of a school shooting in Parkland, Florida, last year.

The film was directed by Robert Greenwald for Brave New Films as part of a series on youth activists across the country.

Brave New Films is based in California, featuring documentaries that seek to “educate, influence and empower viewers to take action around issues that matter,” according to the company’s website.

Montgomery County Students for Change was founded in 2017 as a group focused on gun reform but has evolved to include issues such as voter registration and immigration policy.

Students named winners of stock market game

Students from a handful of county schools were recently named winners of the Maryland Council on Economic Education’s Stock Market Game.

The game is an educational simulation that teaches students about the stock markets by allowing students to make mock transactions and trades.

Students in fourth grade through 12th grade from across the country participate in the game that first debuted in 1977. The game lasts 10 weeks and happens each fall and spring.

After registering, an individual or group are given an “account” with a hypothetical $100,000 to invest in common stocks listed on the New York and American Stock Exchanges, and the Nasdaq Stock Market.

Winners included:

• Northwest High School, first place in the central region’s high school spring contest. Team members were Nolan Deja, Hunter Harris, Bryson Martin and Hanna Rim.
• Northwest High School, first place in the central region’s high school fall contest. Team members were Robert Antonsecu, Tannyr Cook, Matthew Eldridge and Mary Frances Igweze.
• Rock Creek Forest Elementary, first place in the statewide fall contest. Team members were Gabriella Carias, Chloe Cardenas, Chelsea Gregonis, Daniella Lacorte-Serrano and Alina Rodriguez.
