Weather has delayed completion of a $26 million expansion of Luxmanor Elementary School by several months, according to school system officials.
The project at the North Bethesda school was expected to be wrapped up by November, but has been delayed until at least late March, according to school system Chief Operating Officer Andy Zuckerman.
The school system is discussing whether to move into an addition over spring break or wait until the end of the 2019-2020 academic year, Zuckerman said.
“We’ve had some feedback that a spring break move really isn’t ideal due to transportation and child-care arrangements, so we could be looking at an end of the year opening, but we’ll stay in communication with families as the process moves along,” Zuckerman said.
During construction, which started in 2017, Luxmanor students are attending classes at Grosvenor Center, a holding facility on Grosvenor Lane.
The project will increase the school’s capacity from 410 to 750 students. The school is currently about 100 students over capacity.
The project includes a three-story building to add 10 classrooms. The school will have about 80 parking spaces and room for nine buses in a bus loop driveway.
Luxmanor was built in 1966 and underwent expansions in 1988 and 2008, according to school system documents.
Other elementary school addition projects expected to be complete in January 2020 but have hit weather delays are at Maryvale Elementary School in Rockville where a $52 million revitalization and expansion is underway and Potomac Elementary School, where a $30 million project is being completed.
Both are expected to be complete in late March of next year.
