Poll finds speeding, reckless driving concern area motorists as fatalities rise

Nearly 6 in 10 Washington-area residents say drivers frequently violate traffic laws in the region, more than say the same about pedestrians, bicyclists or electric scooter riders, according to a Washington Post-Schar School poll. Perhaps surprisingly, drivers are more likely to fault other drivers as scofflaws than they are to complain about other road users. [Washington Post]

Downed utility pole closes Route 198 near Burtonsville

Route 198 was closed early Monday near the intersection with Phillips Oak Drive in Burtonsville due to a downed utility pole and wires, according to state highway officials. Drivers are encouraged to avoid the area, as officials say the road could be closed for up to four hours. [Washington Post]

Germantown family displaced after fire engulfs town home

A family of four was forced out of its town home Sunday night after a fire engulfed the second floor of the building on the 13500 block of Station Street in Germantown. The family included two adults and two children. According to Montgomery County Fire and Rescue spokesman Pete Piringer there were no reported injuries. [WTOP]

Prosecutors consider using new law in case against county man accused of raping four women

Montgomery County prosecutors are considering the implications of a new law passed by the state legislature last year that allows a victim of an alleged rape to include others in the trial who have alleged to have been raped by the same person. The law could have an impact in the case of Philip Kantor, a 46-year-old county man who is alleged to have raped a Chevy Chase woman in January. Kantor has also been accused of raping three other women dating to 2007. [Washington Post]

Deck collapses in Germantown, injuring 100
