Last Day of School Is Next Week
The last day of the 2018-2019 school year for Montgomery students is Friday, June 14.
The school system’s final day of classes was originally scheduled for Thursday, but the academic year was extended one day after the school system used all of its scheduled inclement weather days in February.
Students’ final report cards will be mailed June 24 and the 2019-2020 school year will begin for most students Sept. 3.
Two schools, Arcola and Roscoe Nix elementary schools in Silver Spring will begin classes in July as part of a pilot program to test a longer school year. The two schools have high poverty rates and the goal of the program is to negate “summer learning loss,” according to school officials.
Inaugural class of ‘working students’ graduate
More than 40 students from 19 county high schools this month celebrated the completion of Maryland’s first-ever academy dedicated to helping working students graduate high school.
Guided by career coaches, TranZed Academy for Working Students helped design students’ schedules around their jobs and goals.
The graduates also earned college credits and passed advanced placement courses. Many plan to continue their education at local colleges, according to a news release from TranZed.
Launched in partnership with Montgomery County Public Schools, Montgomery College, University of Maryland University College, TranZed Apprenticeship Services and Pearson Connexus Education, the TranZed Academy for Working Students offers seniors, who have jobs and are on track to graduate on time, career coaching and flexible class scheduling to complete high school without interfering with their jobs and career goals.
Roberto Clemente students finalists in science competition
A group of three seventh-grade students at Roberto Clemente Middle School in Germantown have been named finalists in a national program that challenges students to develop solutions to real-world, local issues using science, technology, engineering and math.
The team, including Shrusti Amula, Angelina Xu and Advika Agarwal, won first place in the competition’s northeast region, which includes 15 states, and will advance to the national competition later this month in Washington, D.C.
The team has implemented a solid food waste management program at Clarksburg Elementary School and has also developed a device that aims to reduce how often trash is picked up and reduce the cost of running the program at school.
The competition, eCYBERMISSION, is sponsored by the U.S. Army.
