Bookstore with French flair opening in Kensington
Bonjour Books DC has expanded from a pop-up store in the back of Kensington Row Bookshop to a full storefront on Howard Avenue.
The store will have book clubs and classes in French, along with new and used books and magazines.
Bonjour Books is owned and operated by Jennifer Fulton of Bethesda. Fulton will hold a grand opening on Saturday, featuring a ribbon-cutting with executive director of the French-American Chamber of Commerce Denis Chazelle and Kensington Mayor Tracey Furman.
French author and Kensington resident Carle Geneix will present her book, “La Mille et Deuxieme Nuit,” (“The Thousand and Second Night”) following the ribbon-cutting.

Market raises funds for Peace Day celebration
The Rockville Town Square grocery Dawson’s Market hosted an afternoon of food and entertainment on Sunday in honor of Mattie J.T. Stepanek, a Rockville poet and activist who died from Dysautonomic Mitochondrial Myopathy.
The event raised money for the Mattie J.T. Stepanek Foundation’s Peace Day, an annual event to continue the teen’s legacy.
“As a company, our mission it to support the local community with event and causes that reflect our mission to lead a positive change,” Dawson’s Market owner Bart Yablonsky said in a statement. “The Stepanek foundation’s goal to Make Peace the News is something we can all get behind.”
Dawson’s unveiled a five-foot mosaic created during Peace Day 2018 at Sunday’s event, along with another community mosaic made by the Rockville arts center VisArts. Both works will be travel across the country with the Mattie Stepanek Foundation before being permanently installed in Rockville.
“We are grateful to the community and to Dawson’s for supporting Mattie’s message of peace and we look forward to furthering our goal to create a National Peace Day in our country,” said Jeni Stepanek, Mattie’s mother, in a statement.
Potomac-based CertifiKid offering 40 camp scholarships
The family-focused deal website CertifiKid featured on “Shark Tank will send another 40 Washington area children to summer programs through its Camp Scholarship initiative.
Recipients can use the $250 awards to make any camp purchase on the CertifiKid website, where opportunities are already 50% off. The company funded 24 scholarships in 2018, the inaugural year of the program.
“We are thrilled that we’ve been able to expand our Camp Scholarship Program so significantly in just one year,” CertifiKID Founder and CEO Jamie Ratner said in a statement. “It’s an amazing feeling to be able to send 16 additional kids to camp this summer, and we are tremendously grateful for the generosity of our CertifiKID community that helped make this happen.”
The awards are funded by website subscribers, who are given the opportunity to contribute during the checkout process. All of the money collected through the program platform goes toward scholarships.
“Our customers come to us to save money, so it blows me away when I see them make contributions that equal or exceed the amount they’re saving on their purchase,” Ratner said.
Free Dentistry Day at Rockville Office
A Rockville practice, Innovative Dentistry, is offering complimentary dental services on Saturday at as part of a promotion.
“Dental health is a vital part of a person’s overall health,” Dr. Robert Caldwell said in a statement. “Through this event, we hope to educate patients on the importance of dental health and encourage them to adopt an ongoing oral care regimen.”
Patients can choose one free cleaning, filling or extraction. The office will accept patients on a first-come, first-serve basis from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
