County leaders teach students how to ride bikes
A program for students in a county-sponsored after school program recently learned how to ride bicycles with the help of government leaders, the county Recreation Department, Department of Transportation and Fire and Rescue services.
About 50 third-grade students from Oak View Elementary School in Silver Spring spent several weeks learning how to ride bikes and bicycle safety, which culminated in a 2-mile ride Wednesday afternoon. Riders traveled from Oak View to the Long Branch Library, the Long Branch Recreation Center and back to school.
The kids participated in an essay contest describing what the new skill means to them and Dick’s Sporting Goods donated bicycles to raffle to the children. The county Fire and Rescue Services donated bike helmets for each student.
Roughly three-quarters of the students who participated had never ridden a bike before, according to event organizers.

The award is designed to “focus attention on the unique contributions of professional school counselors and the tremendous impact school counselors have in helping students in the county achieve school success, plan for a career and be college ready,” according to school board documents.
Students encouraged to apply to be a ‘council member for a day’
Montgomery students in eighth through 11th grade are encouraged to apply to be a County Council member for a day by submitting an essay to council member Craig Rice outlining what they believe to be the most important public policy issue young people face.
The 500-word essays or two-minute YouTube videos must be submitted by June 5 and include possible solutions to the student’s chosen issue.
One student will be selected as an honorary County Council member and shadow Rice for a day, participating in a full meeting and receiving a $500 gift card.
