Loose Pavement, Sinkhole Repairs Close Stretch of River Road

Detours near Potomac expected to be in place through weekend

May 30, 2019 7:32 p.m.

A stretch of River Road between Esworthy Road and Longacres Preserve Court will be closed through the weekend for emergency repairs to the pavement following recent rainstorms, according to the State Highway Administration.

Shantee Felix, a spokeswoman for the SHA, said Thursday storms had caused the pavement to become loose.

News photos Friday morning showed crew repairing a sinkhole.

About 3,500 vehicles a day use the tw0-lane portion of the road being repaired.

The SHA, which maintains River Road, or Route 190, is asking drivers to use Esworthy Road and Seneca Road as a detour to access River Road west of the work zone.

Local traffic, or those needing to travel between Esworthy Road and Longacres Preserve Court, will be allowed to use River Road.
