Thursday storms leave thousands without power

A line of severe thunderstorms in the Washington region Thursday resulted in a tornado in Howard County and about 20,000 power outages in Montgomery and Prince George’s County, according to Pepco. The storms knocked down trees and utility poles, including one tree in Bethesda that fell on a house after being struck by lightning. No one in the house was injured, said Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Spokesman Pete Piringer [Washington Post].

Maryland and Virginia senators push for renewed Metro funding agreement

Maryland’s U.S. Sens. Ben Cardin and Chris Van Hollen have teamed up with Senators Tim Kaine and Mark Warner, of Virginia, to push for a renewed federal subsidy of $200 million per year for Metro. The transit system has received $150 million from Congress over the past decade, but the agreement is set to expire later this year. The senators, all Democrats, have included a provision in the legislation that ensures Metro meets safety requirements and gives the inspector general more power [Maryland Matters].
