Clean energy bill passes without Hogan’s signature
Maryland must get 50% of its electricity from renewable sources starting in 2030, following the announcement Wednesday that Gov. Larry Hogan (R) would not veto the bill that passed the state legislature this year. Maryland will join nine states and the District of Columbia as the only states in the country with renewable standards above 50%. State Sen. Brian Feldman, a Montgomery County Democrat who sponsored the bill, said he expects it will create 20,000 solar jobs and 5,000 wind jobs by 2028 [Washington Post].
Recycling truck catches fire on I-270
A recycling truck traveling on I-270 Wednesday afternoon caught fire after one of its tires blew out, closing the interstate’s six northbound lanes for 90 minutes. Montgomery Fire & Rescue spokesman Pete Piringer said the truck’s driver and two passengers were transported to a local hospital, with the passengers having non-serious injuries. The driver’s condition was not known [WUSA].
Bethesda teenage boy goes missing
Montgomery County police are searching for 14-year-old Xiresse West-Owens, of Bethesda. West-Owens, according to police, was last seen May 11 leaving his home on the 6300 block of Greentree Road. He is described as a black male, 5 foot 8 inches and 140 pounds with black shaved hair and brown eyes [WUSA].
50 years ago, three men vandalized Silver Spring’s draft board office to protest the Vietnam War
On May 21, 1969, 22-year-old Les Bayless, 17-year-old Jonathan Bayless and 18-year-old Michael Bransome destroyed military draft records and wrecked office equipment inside the Silver Spring draft board’s office. The “Silver Spring Three,” who were protesting the Vietnam War, didn’t know their actions would have longstanding repercussions [Washington Post].
