Kensington Town Council to discuss proposal that would lower voting age in town elections to 16
The Kensington Town Council will discuss a proposal at its meeting Monday night that would allow 16- and 17-year-old town residents to vote in local elections. If Kensington were to adopt the measure, it become the fifth jurisdiction in Maryland to grant suffrage to 16-year-olds, joining Takoma Park, Hyattsville, Greenbelt and Riverdale Park. The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. in Kensington’s town hall, 3710 Mitchell St.
Council to consider parking rate changes at Tuesday meeting
The Montgomery County Council will consider proposed changes to parking fees in the Bethesda, Silver Spring and Wheaton urban districts at its meeting Tuesday. County Executive Marc Elrich, as part of his proposed fiscal 2020 budget, has reccomended increasing on-street fares in Bethesda and Silver Spring and extending on-street payment enforcement hours in Wheaton. If approved, drivers in Bethesda could pay as much as $3.25 per hour at select on-street meters during peak times, with the goal of encouraging more use of county garages. Tuesday’s meeting begins at 9:30 a.m. in the council’s Rockville chambers, 100 Maryland Ave.
State Department of Transportation to hold forum on toll lane proposal Thursday
The Maryland State Department of Transportation will hold a public forum on Gov. Larry Hogan’s plan to add toll lanes to Interstates 495 and 270. The meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. at Seneca Valley High School in Germantown, 19401 Crystal Rock Drive.
Gaithersburg Book Festival to be held Saturday
The annual Gaithersburg Book Festival will be Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The event features lectures from a number of renowned authors along with writing workshops and other exhibits. The festival is located downtown at city hall, 31 S. Summit Ave. Free shuttle service is available from Lakeforest mall.
