Two students recognized as Presidential Scholars
Two Montgomery County high school seniors were recognized this week as U.S. Presidential Scholars.
Chosen by the White House Commission of Presidential Scholars based on academic success, artistic excellence, school essays, community service and transcripts, Garyk Brixi of Winston Churchill High School in Potomac, and Addele Hargenrader of Richard Montgomery High School in Rockville were among 161 students nationally to be named U.S. Presidential Scholars.
The pair will receive a Presidential Scholar Medallion during a ceremony on June 23.
Bethesda teacher receives state award
A Bethesda private school teacher was named the 2019 Christine D. Sarbanes Teacher of the Year by Maryland Humanities, a statewide nonprofit that supports educational experiences in humanities.
Katherine Hopper, a middle school English teacher at Washington Episcopal School is the first Montgomery County teacher to receive the honor.
Established in 2010, the Christine D. Sarbanes Teacher of the Year Award is presented to a Maryland-based educator who teaches students who participate in the Letters About Literature program and promotes reading and writing by employing creative teaching methods.
Christine Sarbanes, former Maryland Humanities board member and longtime faculty member at the Gilman School in Baltimore, died in 2009.
Hopper has been teaching for 25 years and has been at the Bethesda school for 10 years and was chosen for the award based on her passion to making her classroom a “richly literate environment.”
MCPS to host first-ever LGBTQIA forum
The Montgomery public school system, in collaboration with the county coalition of parent-teacher associations, on May 18 will host its first-ever forum focusing on lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex and asexual student issues.
The forum, expected to draw hundreds, will be held from 9 a.m. to noon at Thomas S. Wootton High School in Rockville.
Region’s first all-female math competition scheduled
A local group will sponsor what is believed to be the first all-girls math competition for middle and high school students on May 18 at Montgomery College’s Rockville campus.
Scheduled to run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the competition will feature teams of three who will collaborate to solve problems, promoting teamwork and inclusion.
Sponsored by regional group InteGirls, the competition aims to foster and promote girls’ passion for math in a male-dominated field.
