Silver Spring Man Killed in Southern Maryland Crash

State police investigation continues into reason for Route 5 wrong-way collision

Updated: A Silver Spring man died Thursday morning after his car was struck by a car going the wrong way on a Southern Maryland highway, state police said.

Timothy Markin, 47, was northbound on Route 5 near Huckleberry Drive in Hughesville when his Toyota Camry was struck head-on by a Mercedes-Benz that was southbound in the northbound lanes, police said.

State troopers and the Charles County Sheriff’s Office responded at 1:52 a.m.

Markin was pronounced dead at the scene. The Hughesville man driving the Mercedes-Benz was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

The investigation is ongoing and no charges had been filed as of Friday morning. State police said alcohol may have been a factor in the crash.
