Elementary students release ladybugs to celebrate Earth Day

To mark Earth Day, students at Bethesda Country Day School, a private school for 2-year-olds through kindergarten, last week released 10,000 ladybugs throughout the schoolyard on plants, flowers and trees to help local vegetation.

Ladybugs eat insects that would otherwise harm grass, gardens, trees and shrubs.

Leading up to the event, students were taught about the insects and their impact on the environment.

Bike to School Day scheduled for Wednesday

Hundreds of Montgomery students are expected to ride their bicycles to school on Wednesday after the county school board formally recognized the day as Bike to School Day, part of a nationwide movement.

The board made the designation at its most recent meeting, joining thousands of schools and communities from across the United States in a day dedicated to increasing student’s movement and reducing pollution from vehicles.

Built on the popularity of National Walk to School Day, which is celebrated each October, National Bike to School Day was formulated by the League of American Bicyclists to provide an opportunity for schools across the nation to celebrate the National Bike Month in May. The first Bike to School day was celebrated in 2012.

Girl Power contest winners announced

The Montgomery County Commission for Women recently announced the winners of its third annual Girl Power contest.

Contestants had to write a brief essay on the topic: If you had a superpower, how would you use that power to help girls and women? Entries, submitted by elementary, middle and high school students, were judged based on creativity and content.
