Stabbing leaves four injured at Burtonsville restaurant

Four people were injured after being stabbed Saturday around 1:30 a.m., following a dispute at Chapala Restaurant on Old Columbia Pike in Burtonsville. Montgomery County Police spokesman Officer Rick Goodale said the suspect was a regular customer at the restaurant, but had not yet been arrested. Goodale said he did not think the victims’ injuries were life-threatening. [Washington Post]

House speaker’s race heats up

The race between Prince George’s County Del. Dereck Davis and Baltimore City Del. Maggie McIntosh, both Democrats, to become the next speaker of Maryland’s House of Delegates has intensified to the point where party leaders are threatening to penalize lawmakers who promote the candidate being favored by Republicans. Additional threats of political retaliation are coming from outside advocacy groups. Should Davis be elected, he would be the first African American speaker in Maryland’s history, and if McIntosh is elected, she would be the first woman and openly gay speaker. [Washington Post]

Reality of proposed Beltway widening begins to sink in

A proposed toll lane expansion of the Beltway has several residents worried after finding out that a study by Maryland state highway officials identifies Georgia Avenue as a corridor where homes could be leveled under eminent domain. Additionally, Carderock Springs Elementary School in Bethesda is identified as an area that could experience noise increases to levels of 66 decibels or more. [Washington Post]

Bethesda artist creates environmental art exhibit by dumping 1,700 bottles in Brookside Gardens

Keira Hart-Mendoza, a Bethesda artist, says she dumped 1,700 bottles in Wheaton’s Brookside Gardens to create an environmental art exhibit that raises awareness about trash’s impacts on nature, and encourages people to use less waste. The exhibit, called “The Legacy Project — Our Lives of Consumption and Waste,” opened earlier this month and closes Tuesday. [Washington Post]
