A Germantown man died after he was hit by a dump truck while crossing Interstate 270 near Germantown Monday afternoon, state police announced Tuesday.

Investigators have not said why Tyrone Alonzo Jones, 36, was in a middle northbound lane of the six-lane highway near Route 118 when he was struck.

State police said they received a call at 12:15 p.m. reporting a person in the roadway, which has a 55 mph speed limit in the area, and while troopers were on the way to investigate, they received another call that a pedestrian had been struck.

Jones was taken to MedStar Washington Hospital Center in critical condition and was pronounced dead at 1:16 p.m., according to police.
