Glenallan teacher honored for incorporating nature, environment into lessons
A teacher at Glenallan Elementary School in Silver Spring was honored as an “environmental champion” during the Audubon Naturalist Society’s second-annual Naturally Latinos Conference
Zulay Joa was one of six environmental champions in the Washington area honored for contributions to nature and the environment.
More than 20 speakers discussed “resilience and recovery” in the Latin environmental community at the conference, and nearly 200 people attended.
“Ms. Joa daily teaches the wonders of nature to Glenallan students, whether she’s going outdoors with kindergarteners in search of earthworms or taking older students to nearby creeks to learn about aquatic organisms and water quality,” Serenella Linares, co-chair of the conference, said in a statement. “We are delighted by her commitment and creativity to making nature meaningful to today’s youth.”
Meetings about new curriculum scheduled
Parents are invited to attend informational meetings about new middle school English and math curriculum next week.
The school board in February approved the $27 million purchase of new elementary and middle school curriculum after a study by the Johns Hopkins Institute for Education Policy determined Montgomery County’s self-designed curriculum did not meet federal standards adopted by the state Board of Education.
Community meetings to explain what the material will include will be held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Tuesday at Montgomery Blair High School, Wednesday at Richard Montgomery High School and Thursday at Hallie Wells Middle School.
Elementary-level material presentations will be held in May.
KID Museum to host panel about future workforce
The Bethesda-based KID Museum will host a “community conversation” on Wednesday about the future of the country’s workforce and the skills and mindsets children will need to succeed in a “rapidly-changing economy.”
The event will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. at the museum on Democracy Boulevard.
Author Daniel H. Pink will be the moderator and panelists are school system superintendent Jack Smith, Social & Scientific Systems CEO Kevin Beverly, Lockheed Martin Workforce Solutions & Intelligence Vice President Jean Wallace and Cognizant Head of Strategy Paul Roehrig.
