Terms of the deal, announced last week, were not disclosed.

Hattrick-Simpers is a materials research engineer at the National Institute of Standards and Technology in Gaithersburg. He is examining new materials that could apply to several critical technologies, according to an announcement from the science center.

Hattrick-Simpers has been awarded three patents and is at the forefront of the Materials Genome Initiative, which is designed to speed up the creation and deployment of advanced materials, according to announcement.

The awards highlight scientists and engineers in the state who have made significant contributions in their fields before the age of 40, or 35 if working in academia. The Outstanding Young Scientist award was established in 1959, followed by its engineering counterpart in 1988.

“These awards are an annual reminder that Maryland is home to amazing young scientific and engineering talent, as well as the notable institutions that host and empower them,” Maryland Science Center President and CEO Mark J. Potter said in a statement.

Olive & Loom has products in stores across the country and in Canada. The 765-square-foot Pike & Rose location is the company’s second in Maryland, as Sabun Home in downtown Bethesda also carries Olive & Loom products.

The company was started in 2016 by Turkey native Ferzan Jaeger, working to combine the cultures of her homeland and the United States.

Olive & Loom sells robes, towels and blankets along with clothing and accessories.

“Olive & Loom’s mission is to bring you traditional, old world goods with a fresh, modern aesthetic,” Jaeger said on the company’s website. “We focus on practical items made using artisanal methods and all natural sources.”

Gaithersburg-Germantown Chamber of Commerce celebrates 70 years

The chamber received a citation from Gov. Larry Hogan to commemorate the milestone.

In a presentation from Maryland Department of Commerce Secretary Kelly Schulz and County Council member Sidney Katz, March 20 was declared Gaithersburg-Germantown Chamber of Commerce Day.

“This is an exciting year for us,” GGCC President Marilyn Balcombe said in a statement. “It is great to receive the recognition from the Governor and Maryland Commerce Secretary Kelly Schulz.”

The chamber includes 430 members representing more than 50,000 employees in the county.

The Gaithersburg Business Men’s Association was created in 1949, and eventually became the Gaithersburg Chamber of Commerce, Balcombe said. The chamber merged with Germantown’s in 2000.
