Updated: More than 100 county firefighters knocked down a fire on the ninth floor of The Waterford Condominium in Kensington Tuesday morning and moved all residents safely from the building.
County Fire and Rescue Service units received the call of a fire at 3333 University Blvd. West around 5:15 a.m., spokesman Pete Piringer said.
The fire started in a ninth floor unit, with “heavy fire conditions showing from the rear of the building,” Piringer said. The front of the 12-floor, 150-unit complex did not show any damage, though condos around the origin location were affected.
Two residents and a firefighter were taken to a hospital with what were described as minor injuries, Piringer said.
The resident from the condo was treated for minor smoke inhalation, Piringer said. She discovered the fire and was able to sound the building fire alarm to alert others.
The cause and extent of the fire is still under investigation, but it did “significant damage,” Piringer said.
Portions of University Boulevard between Viers Mill Road and Connecticut Avenue were closed and reopened just before noon.
