Assisted suicide bill defeated in General Assembly

The Maryland Senate defeated a bill that would have allowed doctors to prescribe a lethal dose of drugs to dying patients with a tie, 23-23 vote.

The bill was heavily amended earlier in the session to allow lawsuits against doctors who help patients end their lives, dissuading advocates from supporting the measure. [Washington Post]

Speed limits to be reduced on Georgia Avenue

The Maryland Department of Transportation will reduce the speed limit along a portion of Georgia Avenue to promote pedestrian safety.

The changes include narrowing lanes and upgrading sidewalks.

Between Maryland Route 586 and Arcola Avenue in Wheaton, the speed limit will be reduced from 35 mph to 25 mph; From 45 mph to 35 mph between Glenallan Avenue and Maryland Route 185; And from 50 mph to 45 mph between Maryland Route 185 and Cherry Valley Drive. [WTOP]

Hogan appoints former county man as public safety and corrections secretary

Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan on Wednesday appointed a man with Montgomery County ties as acting public safety and corrections secretary.

J. Michael Zeigler began his career as an Army medic and later joined the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services. He also managed the department’s internal affairs unit and later worked on a state police medevac helicopter as a paramedic for 16 years. [Baltimore Sun]
