Rockville Man Dies after Colorado Skiing Accident

Attorney fell along one of Aspen’s most difficult slopes

A Rockville man and longtime Washington-area lawyer died last week after a skiing accident on an Aspen, Colorado mountain range, authorities said.

Joseph Bottiglieri, 56, was injured in a fall at the Highlands Bowl on March 21, according to the Pitkin County, Colorado, Coroner’s Office. He died the next day.

The Highlands Bowl is a portion of the Aspen Highlands and is primarily expert terrain, according to the Aspen Skiing Company, which operates the area.

The Aspen Highlands include 1,040 acres of skiable terrain rising to 3,635 feet at its peak.

The company classifies 65 percent of the Highlands as terrain for expert skiiers.

The cause of death is still under investigation but was ruled accidental, according to the Coroner’s Office.

Bottiglieri was a partner in the Bonner Kiernan law firm’s Washington, D.C., office and had been with the group since 2001.

He worked for more than 25 years in commercial litigation, including cases of product liability, insurance disputes and commercial leasing.

Bottiglieri was a triathlete and avid biker, regularly participating in 50- and 100-mile rides, according to an obituary from the law firm. He is survived by his wife Tracy and sons Nicholas and Matthew.
