A 3-year-old boy who died Monday after he was struck by an SUV in a parking lot in Rockville apparently was running to see relatives a short distance away, police said.

Police believe Antonio Martinez Cruz, of Rockville, was with his mother when he saw the relatives and ran into the path of an oncoming Ford Explorer in a parking lot at 611 Rockville Pike, south of the Town Center.

The Riverdale man driving the SUV remained at the scene.

No charges have been filed as detectives continue to investigate the collision, police spokesman Capt. Tom Jordan said Wednesday.
