A handgun used in a 2014 homicide in Prince George’s County helped Montgomery County police track down three men they said were involved in a 2013 Aspen Hill murder, according to police and court documents.
Trevon Derick Davis, 28, of Hyattsville, and Bryan Donte Byrd, 28, of Washington, D.C., were arrested earlier this month in the District, and were charged Thursday by Montgomery County Police for a homicide that occurred during what was believed to be a home-invasion robbery.
Police also obtained an arrest warrant for Vaughn Darvel Bellamy, 28, of Hagerstown, charging him with first-degree murder, armed robbery, and first-degree burglary. He is currently in a state prison in Hagerstown.
On Nov. 6, 2013, police were sent to the report of a shooting at a home in the 13400 block of Grenoble Drive where they found 34-year-old Alexander Benson Buie with multiple bullet wounds.
A preliminary investigation found three men, one with a handgun, forced their way into the Aspen Hill home and confronted three male residents, including Buie, who was shot in a struggle and died later from his injuries.
Charging documents state Byrd and Bellamy conspired to rob another man, believed to be a drug dealer possessing large amounts of cash, who had moved out of the residence.
Cellphone records show Byrd and Bellamy planned to rob the man where he worked, but failed, and they enlisted Davis to attempt a home-invasion robbery, according to charging documents.
Police believe the suspects had information about the intended target’s bedroom, along with a physical description. Buie was living in the room, and he was also the only resident to match the description.
Bellamy had been arrested in 2014 for a separate homicide in Prince George’s County, and police recovered a .40-caliber Smith & Wesson handgun, according to charging documents. Ballistics evidence confirmed the handgun was used in the Aspen Hill homicide.
In November 2018, the owner of the gun was traced through a pawn shop database, and police discovered it was purchased on behalf of an associate of Bellamy, according to charging documents. After an unrelated arrest in December 2018, Byrd admitted he had recognized the gun and held it before.
Byrd was released after posting a $150,000 bond and Davis remains incarcerated in the District pending extradition to Montgomery County, police said.
A preliminary hearing for Byrd is scheduled for April 5 in Rockville District Court. Online records do not list an attorney.
Court information was not available Friday for Bellamy or Davis.
