Choose Respect conference scheduled for April
The 10th annual Choose Respect Montgomery conference will be held April 7, at Richard Montgomery High School in Rockville.
The event focuses on teen dating violence and includes a resource fair and interactive workshops.
One in three teens in the country is a victim of physical, sexual, emotional or verbal abuse from an intimate partner, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Bradley Hills students to compete at Odyssey of the Mind World Finals
Students from Bethesda’s Bradley Hills Elementary School will compete in the Odyssey of the Mind world finals later this spring.
Odyssey of the Mind is an international problem-solving competition where students work in groups of seven or less to present a solution to one of five problems.
Students work on these solutions for six to eight months. Adults are not permitted to share ideas, help solve, or weigh in on any aspect of the problem-solving process.
The students presented their solutions to a panel of judges at the state competition March 3, and two Bradley Hills teams were chosen to compete at the next level.
The teams are raising funds to help with their trip to the world finals in Michigan, with a fundraiser planned for Tuesday at Five Guys restaurant on Bethesda Avenue.
Between 5 and 9 p.m., 15 percent of proceeds will be donated by the restaurant to the students.
Silver Spring educator named Special Education Teacher of the Year
The Maryland State Council for Exceptional Children has named Fairland Elementary School teacher Teri Stetson its Special Education Teacher of the Year.
Stetson was chosen based on her work to improve the education and quality of life for children with disabilities, and to enhance their families’ engagement in education activities.
She received several nominations and has worked with special needs children for more than 30 years.
“She is a role model for all of the teachers that come to her for resource services, support and creative instruction on how to approach curriculum and teaching, and is a sought-after expert in the school community by many of its members,” one nomination said. “She goes above and beyond on a daily basis, to ensure that (individualized education plan) goals are not only met, but exceeded.”
