After more than two years of investigation, Montgomery County police have arrested and charged a teenager with two counts of murder for a pair of stabbings at Westfield Wheaton mall in January 2017.
King Yassin Leigh-Conteh, 19, of the 8700 Block of Colesville Road in Silver Spring, was arrested Monday after a search of his residence found “items of evidentiary value,” police said.
Leigh-Conteh is being held in a county detention center. He has a bond hearing scheduled for Tuesday afternoon.
Angel Alfredo Gomez Pineda, 24, of Silver Spring and Kevin Siloe Moya Cruz, 22, of Wheaton, were killed in an assault on Jan. 10 after multiple altercations with the suspect, police said.
Police arrested one teen a day after the slayings, but charges were dropped in March 2017. Prosecutors at the time said “there was not enough evidence” to prosecute the youth.
Additional surveillance photos and video footage of the suspect were released more than a year later in August 2018 with police seeking help from the public in identifying the suspect.
Court records do not list an attorney for Leigh-Conteh.
