Montgomery delegates among advocates for $15 state minimum wage

House Democrats in the Maryland legislature have made the $15 state minimum wage one of their key issues this session, modeled after similar laws passed in several counties, including Montgomery. Del. Lorig Charkoudian, of Takoma Park, said she was disappointed Monday that the bill doesn’t include all workers and doesn’t match the wage increase with cost-of-living increases. Del. Jared Solomon, of Chevy Chase, however, said he was open to the compromise if it moved the bill forward [Washington Post].

Silver Spring man admits stealing $250,000 from nonprofit

William Woodward, of Silver Spring, stole $250,000 from the Masonic nonprofit organization all Cedars of Lebanon of North America’s Montgomery Forest 134 over a three-year period, according to the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s office. Woodward, 62, was treasurer when the theft is alleged to have occurred between January 2015 and February 2018. The funds were intended for funding a cure for muscular dystrophy. He recently pleaded guilty to embezzlement recently and is scheduled for sentencing March 11 [WJLA]

County Council commemorates black history month

The Montgomery County Council paid tribute to February as black history month Tuesday by honoring a number of notable black figures in the community. Among those honored were council members Craig Rice and Will Jawando, Montgomery College President DeRionne Pollard and Montgomery County Board of Education President Shebra Evans [WJLA].
