A building services worker at Sherwood High School was charged earlier this month with attempted murder after allegedly shooting a man in Prince George’s County.
Brandon Lamont Gales, 24, of the 12700 block of Layhill Road in Silver Spring, is accused of shooting another man in the lower body after a dispute at a home in Fort Washington, Prince George’s County police said.
Gales, hired in 2015, has been placed on administrative leave by the Montgomery County school system and is receiving pay and benefits but is not at work while he’s held without bond in a Prince George’s County detention center, according to a letter sent to students and families from Sherwood Principal Eric Minus and Prince George’s County police.
Gales was arrested on Feb. 7 and charged with attempted second-degree murder, two counts of assault and carrying a handgun. Police declined to indicate how Gales was identified in the case. They said the victim’s injuries were not life-threatening.
Sherwood High School, in Sandy Spring, has an enrollment of about 2,000 students.
Since 2017, Gales has been charged in three separate cases with second-degree assault, theft and domestic violence, according to online court records. All three cases were dismissed by the plaintiff or prosecutor for reasons that could not be determined.
The school system does not require staff to report arrests for such crimes under its policy about self-reporting of arrests, criminal charges and convictions.
A Montgomery County school system spokesman did not respond to requests seeking comment on Tuesday.
A preliminary hearing for Gales is scheduled for March 8 in Prince George’s County Circuit Court.
Court records did not list an attorney for Gales.
