Northwest High School students create pedestrian safety public service announcement
Students at Northwest High School in Germantown, in conjunction with county police and fire and rescue services, recently created a public service announcement detailing the dangers pedestrians face on Montgomery County roads.
The three-minute video features a girl who is crossing the street when she receives a text message, checks it and is struck by a vehicle, emphasizing the importance of attentive pedestrian practices and responsibilities of drivers to remain aware of potential road hazards.
Rockville fourth-graders eligible to be ‘Mayor for a Day’
One Rockville fourth-grade student will be chosen as the city’s ‘Mayor for a Day’ later this year.
Students can enter the contest by writing a 275-word essay with the theme of “together we can,” describing how, if they were mayor, they would encourage the community and city officials to work together on complicated issues.
At the conclusion of the statewide contest, sponsored by the Maryland Municipal League, the Rockville City Council will chose one participant to be the city’s mayor for one day in May.
One regional winner will be selected from each of the Municipal League’s 11 regional districts and each will receive $100 and be honored at a ceremony in Annapolis later this year.
Former HOC director sponsoring scholarship fundraiser
Former Montgomery County Housing Opportunities Commission Executive Director Bernie Tetreault will hold a fundraiser to raise money for scholarships for local students.
The April 5 event will feature speakers former New England Patriots cornerback Otis Smith and international whistling champion Chris Ullman. Tickets cost $20 and the event will be at the Kentlands Art Barn, 311 Kent Square Road, in Gaithersburg. There will also be a silent auction, music and light refreshments.
Scholarships are awarded to college students in Montgomery County who are identified as living in poverty, and who live in subsidized housing who are “striving to make a better life for themselves,” Tetreault said in a media release.
Subsidized housing is a government-sponsored housing initiative to assist low-income people with housing costs.
