Former Montgomery County Executive Ike Leggett has been nominated to serve on the University System of Maryland Board of Regents.

Gov. Larry Hogan announced Friday that Leggett, who left office in December due to term limits, was one of 124 appointments the governor has made to various state agencies and commissions.

Hogan named four other nominees to the 17-member Board of Regents, in addition to Leggett. The appointments are subject to confirmation by the Maryland State Senate.

“These appointments reflect the diversity of our state, and I am confident that these appointees will help us continue to change Maryland for the better,” Hogan wrote in a statement.

The Board of Regents is responsible for the administrative and financial activities in the system.

The board also appoints the university system chancellor and the presidents of the dozen colleges in the system. Board members are not paid.

The board has come under fire during the past year for its handling of the fallout surrounding the death of 19-year-old Jordan McNair, a University of Maryland football player who died of heatstroke in June 2018, two weeks after a practice.

The board voted in October to retain football coach DJ Durkin, but University of Maryland, College Park President Wallace Loh fired Durkin Nov. 1. Board chairman James Brady resigned following an investigation into the school’s handling of the death and the regents’ decision to keep Durkin.

Leggett served as county executive for three terms between 2006 and 2018. Previously he was the county’s first black elected to the County Council, serving from 1986 to 2002.

Leggett could not be reached for comment Friday.

Among Hogan’s other appointments announced Friday was former Democratic state delegate Marice Morales, who will join the Montgomery College Board of Trustees.

Morales served one term in the legislature representing District 19 (Aspen Hill/Wheaton) before being defeated in last year’s Democratic primary. The trustees are volunteer positions.
