County Council to hold public hearing on Capital Budget Amendments

The Montgomery County Council will hold public hearings on three amendments to the five-year Capital Improvements Program budget, requested by County Executive Marc Elrich.

The amendments include a $17 million addition for construction on the planned South County Regional and Aquatic Center, $2 million for renovations to the Council Office Building parking garage  $1 million for road resurfacing. The public hearings start at 1:30 p.m.

School board to discuss excused absence policy for civic engagement

The Montgomery County Board of Education will discuss a proposed policy that would excuse students from school for civic engagement. This will be the fourth time the board has discussed the policy since it was proposed last summer. Additionally, the board is scheduled to adopt the superintendent’s 2020 operating budget and approve new English instructional materials for elementary school students.

Chevy Chase, Kensington to discuss cellphone tower ordinances

The Town of Chevy Chase and Town of Kensington’s mayor and councils will both discuss amendments to their respective town codes this week as it relates to installing wireless cellular towers to allow for the installation of faster internet service. The Kensington meeting will be Monday at 7 p.m. and the Chevy Chase meeting will be Wednesday at 7 p.m.

The Montgomery County Council is seeking three-to-five people to serve on a nominating panel that will help choose the next inspector general, an office that provides oversight and analysis of government operations, including looking for cases of waste, fraud or abuse.

Applications are due by 5 p.m. Friday. Letters of interest must be emailed to County.Council@MontgomeryCountyMD.gov or mailed to Council President Nancy Navarro, Montgomery County Council, Stella B. Werner Council Office Building, 100 Maryland Ave., Rockville, Maryland 20850.
