A mix of snow, rain and sleet early Monday morning prompted Montgomery County Public Schools officials to delay classes by two hours.
In a message sent to families around 4:45 a.m., the school system said “emergency weather conditions in some portions of the county” prompted the decision.
At sunrise, conditions varied across Montgomery County, with temperatures slightly above freezing near the District line to below freezing in the northern portions of the county.
Most major roads had been treated with a brine mixture and were mainly wet, according to the state highway monitoring system.
While precipitation was expected to stop by mid-morning with clouds and mild temperatures throughout the day, the National Weather Service issued a weather advisory for parts of Maryland, noting that “significant winter weather may redevelop later this afternoon and tonight” and cause travel problems if there is additional precipitation and roads refreeze.
A second weather system arriving Tuesday could bring snow, sleet or freezing rain, forecasters said.
