Eastern Middle School students make mural
Students at Silver Spring’s Eastern Middle School recently completed a 50-foot mural to promote diversity in a hallway near the main office.
The mural, with the theme “Unity Makes CommUNITY,” combines small triangles or squares of art from more than 1,000 people, symbolizing their identity.
Rosana Azar, director of the art education nonprofit Creative Adventures, helped students complete the painting.
The project was made possible by grants from the the Takoma Foundation and the school system’s Educational Foundation, as well as community donations.
Forum on school diversity
A town hall-style discussion on diversity and the achievement gap in county schools, hosted by WAMU-FM radio’s Kojo Nnamdi, will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Feb. 26 at the Silver Spring Civic Center.
Montgomery County schools Superintendent Jack Smith will be a panelist answering questions during the discussion, which is expected to cover topics such as school overcrowding, the achievement gap that shows higher achievement among white students compared to minority students and school boundaries.
The town hall is free and open to the public.
Summer programs fair scheduled for March
The county school system will hold a fair to highlight summer education programs available for students on March 7.
Local and regional groups will attend to talk about summer camps, programs and volunteer activities. Parents can ask questions, get information about financial assistance and obtain applications for programs.
The fair will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Carver Educational Services Center in Rockville.
