Transit advocates to call for equity Monday
Several environmental and labor advocacy groups will gather for “transit equity day” Monday in the Montgomery County Executive Office Building in Rockville at 6 p.m. The event, sponsored by the Labor Network for Sustainability, is in its second year and includes demands to electrify school and passenger buses, as well as make public transit more accessible to traditionally marginalized communities.
“At the same time it’s good to have a Purple Line and bus rapid transit, we also know that places are being left behind,” said Lindsey Mendelson of the Maryland Sierra Club.
Council to take action on zoning changes Tuesday
The Montgomery County Council is scheduled to take action on two zoning text amendments at its meeting Tuesday morning. One would allow fences to be 8 feet tall if set against a rail line or service road that accesses a rail line. Another would increase the maximum height for free-standing buildings to 90 feet near Westfield Montgomery and Westfield Wheaton malls.
Veirs Mill Corridor hearings scheduled for Thursday
The Montgomery County Council will hold a public hearing on the Veirs Mill Corridor Master Plan Thursday at the Holiday Park Senior Center in Silver Spring at 7:30 p.m. The hearing, rescheduled from last week due to inclement weather, will include a discussion on improving access to bus rapid transit and opportunities for redevelopment.
