Demolition of Bethesda’s former police station is set to begin this week and in its place a $300 million, 22-story office and hotel building will rise.
On Tuesday, pedestrians will be ushered through a covered walkway in the turning lane of Wisconsin Avenue, just south of Montgomery Avenue, as the sidewalk is closed for demolition activity, according to an announcement from developers.
Periodic lane closures will occur next week during non-rush hours, according to project leaders.
The project will replace the former Second District police station at 7359 Wisconsin Ave. with a 220-room hotel and 400,000 square feet of office space about a half mile from the Marriott International headquarters being built on Woodmont Avenue.
Construction is expected to be completed by spring 2021.
As part of a partnership with Montgomery County, Bethesda-based StonebridgeCarras designed and built a new police station on Rugby Avenue, completed last year.
The project was touted by the county Planning Department as a unique project spearheaded by internationally known architects and developers when the plan was approved a year ago.
Ground floor retail will include space for dining, working and congregation, according to Planning Board documents. Plans also include a 3,650-square-foot plaza that will feature landscaped terraces and a waterfall with pools and bridges.
