Updated 5 p.m. Wednesday: A Rockville man accused of killing his mother on Tuesday had blood on his hands when police arrived at the family’s Aspen Hill home, authorities said.
Police found the body of Arabia Camara, 52, after her employer called to say she had not arrived for work at a Washington, D.C., hotel, Tuesday morning.
The police went into the Marianna Drive house through an open window when no one answered the door and found 26-year-old Ousmane Camara with cuts on his hands and discovered his mother’s body in another room with what they described as “apparent trauma.”
Arresting officers said Camara tried to grab an officer’s gun from its holster at the house while he was being taken into custody, police said.
Camara was charged with first-degree murder after he was treated at a hospital, police said.
According to court papers, Camara confessed to stabbing his mother after detectives read him his rights to have an attorney and remain silent, police said Wednesday.
Camara is in the county’s detention center and a preliminary hearing is scheduled for Feb. 22. At a brief hearing conducted by video link to the jail Wednesday afternoon, a judge ordered Camara held without bond.
Wearing a dark-gray prison jumpsuit, Camara answered in the affirmative when the judge asked if he was present but did not speak otherwise.
No defense attorney was listed for Camara Wednesday in online court records and a District Court clerk said court documents would not be available until Thursday.
Court records point to a troubled past. Camara offered a guilty plea to armed robbery following a 2009 arrest and has had several alcohol violations, according to online records.
