First, a bit of fresh news: Montgomery County schools opened two hours late on Thursday, Jan. 31, an announcement made Wednesday afternoon that’s sure to spark a fresh round of social-media commentary.

To be sure, there’s never a shortage of opinions about winter weather-related school closings and delays in Montgomery County.

Students, understandably, are generally thrilled when the school district announces a closure, but parents and community members often question its merit, especially when it comes at the last minute, as was the case Wednesday morning.

What both groups have in common is a desire for the cancellation call – or lack of – to be made sooner, evident when the school district on Tuesday evening announced a two-hour  delayed opening for Wednesday classes.

Then on Wednesday, the schools decided conditions in northern Montgomery were too icy and closed for the day. At the time, some buses had already started in their rounds.

Tuesday night, community members started advocating on social media, asking for a final decision before the morning.

Their pleas were unsuccessful and the cancellation decision was announced at about 7 a.m., met with gratitude from students.

But for at least one student, Wednesday’s cancellation wasn’t enough.
