Prosecutors asked a judge Friday morning for more time for doctors to evaluate the Rockville man charged with murdering his mother outside a Rockville church.
Kevin Justin McGuigan, 21, was charged with first-degree murder after his mother was found stabbed to death outside St. Raphael Catholic Church Dec. 28.
Assistant State’s Attorney Lauren Turner requested a 60-day continuance for the hearing, and the defense did not object. McGuigan’s pretrial hearing is now set for March 22.
The delay allows the state to “better ascertain his competence,” Turner said during Friday’s court appearance.
McGuigan is being held at Perkins Hospital Center, a state psychiatric institution.
He was denied bond in early January, and Judge Amy Bills ordered him held without bond.
