Socialist party started by Silver Spring man certified in Maryland
The Bread and Roses party, started by socialist activist Jerome Segal of Silver Spring, has been officially certified as a party in Maryland by the State Board of Elections. Segal, who calls himself “Maryland’s Bernie Sanders” unsuccessfully challenged U.S. Sen. Ben Cardin (D-Md.) in last year’s primary. [Washington Post]
Elrich takes heat over ‘millennial’ comment
Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich took criticism on social media after he said he would oppose new construction for millennials, “who are people making $60,000 to $80,000 a year,” in order to preserve housing for low-income residents. Asked later about the comment, Elrich said he didn’t mean to equate millennials with high income residents, and said younger people don’t typically have incomes that are that high. [Washington Post]
Plow truck takes down power lines in Aspen Hill
A plow truck accidentally was left with its back end up in the Aspen Hill area Thursday night, taking out several power lines on Norbeck Road, just west of Georgia Avenue. The plow was one of many that was treating the roads as snow fell Thursday night into Friday morning. Police say the power lines were not live and no one was injured, but the road was temporarily shut down. [WJLA]
Did Led Zeppelin play in Wheaton?
An debate rages on as to whether the band Led Zeppelin actually played a concert 50 years ago at the Wheaton Youth Center on the eve of President Richard Nixon’s inauguration. The AFI Silver Theatre in Silver Spring will show a documentary called “Led Zeppelin Played Here” on Sunday to mark the anniversary of the alleged concert. [WAMU]
