A Potomac middle school teacher died during a class Thursday morning.

Herbert Hoover Middle School teacher Deanna Perucci suffered an undisclosed “medical emergency” while leading an English class, according to a letter sent to families by Herbert Hoover Principal Yong-Mi Kim.

“Each of us will react to Ms. Perucci’s death in our own way, and we need to be respectful and supportive of each other,” Kim wrote.

Immediate counseling services were available for students who were present during the medical emergency, and parents were contacted Thursday morning.

Additional counseling services will be available for all students beginning Friday at the 1,000-student school, Kim said.

Perucci began teaching at the school at the beginning of the 2018-2019 school year, according to a letter sent to Herbert Hoover families in August. She previously worked in Anne Arundel County schools and received a master’s from the University of Maryland last year, according to a public online profile.
