New state gun law resulted in 148 seizures in three months

Since Maryland adopted a “red flag” gun law in October that takes away guns from people who pose a threat to themselves or others, state courts have seized 148 guns. According to Montgomery County Sheriff Darren Popkin, Maryland courts received 302 requests to seize guns from people in “crisis” and in about half of those cases, the person was ordered to surrender their weapon. Popkin said there are an average of 100 petitions per month and that 60 percent come from a family or household member. [Washington Post]

Teacher accused of inappropriately touching student enters Alford Plea

Rayshad Golwalla will enter an Alford Plea in a case pending before the Montgomery County Circuit Court in which he is accused of sexually touching a Gaithersburg boy in a private residence in February 2018. Golwalla, 37, was a teacher who worked for a private afterschool computer coding program in several Montgomery County Elementary Schools from 2016 to 2018. Golwalla’s plea means that he accepts a guilty verdict but does not admit to committing a crime. He is scheduled to be sentenced in March. [NBC 4]

Silver Spring man threatens to burn insurance building

Charles Everett Jones, of Takoma Park, has been charged by Montgomery County police with one count of arson after threatening to burn down the Erie Insurance office on Tech Road in Silver Spring due to a claim dispute. Police say that Jones, 51, told Erie Insurance staff on Dec. 14 that he had pancreatic cancer, had just lost both of his parents and would return to the building to set it on fire. Jones was arrested Jan. 3 and is scheduled to appear in court Feb. 5. [WJLA]
